Aztreonam lacks the nephrotoxic effects characteristic of the aminoglycosides, it has a weak immunogenic effect, and it has not been associated with abnormalities in coagulation. However, in the treatment of mixed infections, or those of unknown etiology, combination therapy is necessary to ensure coverage of gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria.
